  1. A sewing machine is an apparatus for the 
  2. mechanical sewing of cloth, leather, and 
  3. other materials by a needle, powered by hand, 
  4. treadle, or belted electric motor. The 
  5. popular lockstitch machine, using a double 
  6. thread, was invented independently in the USA 
  7. by both Walter Hunt 1834 and Elias Howe 1846. 
  8. Howe's machine was the basis of the machine 
  9. patented 1851 by US inventor Isaac Singer.
